Wiring, Printed - Flexible Material Constructions - Component
The devices covered under this category are incomplete in certain constructional features or restricted in performance capabilities and are intended for use as components of complete equipment submitted for investigation rather than for direct separate installation in the field. THE FINAL ACCEPTANCE OF THE COMPONENT IS DEPENDENT UPON ITS INSTALLATION AND USE IN COMPLETE EQUIPMENT SUBMITTED TO UL.
The category covers printed wiring construction incorporating flexible materials for use as components in devices or appliances. Flexible materials are defined as films or materials exhibiting flexible properties. The constructions may use flexible materials in a single or multilayer build-up and in combination with additional flexible or rigid materials. Flexible material constructions may employ etched, die stamped, precut, flush-press, additive plated conductors, polymer thick film, dual access, cast and adhesiveless techniques. Printed-component parts may be used.
Printed wiring, flexible material constructions evaluated for "flexible applications" may be considered suitable for repeated flexing operations. If the end-use product application requires repeated flexing, the construction shall be investigated for the particular application. Printed wiring, flexible material constructions evaluated for "bendable applications" are not considered suitable for repeated flexing operations and are intended to be positioned into place only during installation and servicing. Printed wiring, flexible material constructions evaluated for "non-flexible applications" are not considered suitable for flexing or bending during operation, installation and/or servicing.
The suitability of the pattern parameters, temperature and maximum solder limits are subject to the applicable end-use product construction and performance requirements. The suitability of additional adhesive and/or adhesive/stiffener, not evaluated under this category, are subject to the applicable end-use product construction and performance requirements.
Minimum Cladding Conductor Width — The minimun width of any conductor spaced more than 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) from the edge of the printed wiring, flexible material construction.
Minimum Edge Cladding Conductor Width — The minimum width of any conductor parallel with and not spaced more than 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) from the edge of the printed wiring, flexible material construction.
Cladding Conductor Thickness — The minimum metallic cladding thickness of the conductor.
Number of Clad Sides — Indicates whether the printed wiring, flexible material construction has a pattern on one side (single sided) or on both sides (double sided).
Maximum Area Diameter — The maximum unpierced conductor area of a printed wiring, flexible material construction is judged by the diameter of the largest circle that can be inscribed within the pattern.
Solder Limits — Unless designed for hand soldering only, each printed wiring, flexible material construction is assigned a maximum temperature and dwell time. The tabulated levels are the maximum temperature and cumulative time conditions to which the products may be subjected to during assembly of the components.
Maximum Operating Temperature — The maximum continuous-use temperature that the printed wiring, flexible material construction may be exposed to under normal operating conditions.
UL 94 Flammability Class — Processed printed wiring, flexible material construction with or without applied coatings, finishes, adhesives, stiffeners, and the like, as supplied to the device or appliance manufacturer, may be tested and classed in accordance with the Standard for Flammability of Plastic Material for parts in Devices and Appliances, UL 94, at the option of the manufacturer.
Where such testing has been conducted, the burning test class may be indicated on the printed wiring board either by the full class designation such "94HB" , 94V-0"" 94V-1", " 94V-2", " 94VTM-0", " 94VTM-1", or " 94VTM-2" or by a code designation, the significance of which is recorded in UL files.
A System Component Symbol is marked on the printed wiring, flexible material construction if additional adhesive and/or adhesive/stiffener combinations have been added without evaluation under this category.
Conductors and conductor finishes — Metallic platings on conductors or contact fingers, conductive pastes, plated thru holes, and the like, may be tested at the option of the manufacturer.
This category does not cover constructions employing flexible films of laminated-film construction in which the conductors are parallel to each other and are completely covered by insulation material with only point-to-point end connections. This construction is covered under the category Component-Appliance Wiring Material (AVLV2).
Direct Support of Current-Carrying Parts — A printed wiring, flexible material construction that meets the minimum UL 746E levels of direct-support of current carrying parts is identified to enable the OEM to select appropriate products for the end-use application.
