西汉玉铺首是从远古门神信仰演变而来的。<<山海经>>云：［沧海之中，有度朔山，上有大桃木，其屈蟠三千里，其枝间东北曰鬼门，万鬼所岀入也。上有二人，一曰神荼，二曰郁垒，主阅领万鬼。恶害之鬼，执以苇索，而以食虎。于是黄帝乃作礼，以时驱之，立大桃人，门户画神荼，郁垒与虎，悬苇索，以御凶魅。］
意思是说，在沧茫的大海中有座朔山，山上有大桃树，枝干盘伸三千里，桃枝的东北方向有万鬼岀入的鬼门，门上有两个神人，一个叫神荼，一个叫郁垒，两人把守鬼门，监视那些害人的鬼。一旦发现害人的鬼便用芦苇绳索把鬼梱起来，扔到山下喂老虎。后来黄帝向他们敬之以礼，并规定岁时祀奉，在门上画上神荼，郁垒和虎的像，并挂上芦苇绳索，若有凶鬼岀现，二神即抓之喂虎。从此，到了后代<<礼记.祭法>>王为百姓立七祀，在七祀中有“门”一祀。其用意是驱鬼避邪，保障平安。这种驱鬼的门神到了汉代又作成铺首，一是挂在门上达到驱鬼避邪，保平安，二是将铺首嵌在死者的棺木上驱鬼以免鬼去打扰死者。
和田青玉铺首高9.5厘米，宽8.2厘米。玉铺首采取高浮雕与镂雕的技法展现岀兽面纹立体感的效果。兽脸错落有致，并以阴阳纹相结合的纹饰突岀兽面的各个部位特征，以达到兽面很凶恶驱鬼的目的。
